Selling Books on Ebay
Section 1 - Books That Sell
Selling books is by no means a new profession B&M (Brick and Mortar) Used Book shops are common place in most cities especially in America. So one might ask themselves “how can I expect to make a profitable business at this?” with so many Used Book shops already all over the place. The main answers (to how) in my opinion are as follows:-
(1). B&M Shops have more overheads for example rent, electricity etc. (2). Location, generally speaking B&M Shops only have a small market of buyers, for example only the people who walk through their door. Whereas selling on-line you can choose to sell to any place on this planet. Additionally you can sell items which are region specific for example a New York Guide Book from 1939, it might be the case that such a book would be more likely to appeal to a New Yorker than say a Californian. So it would be safe to say the likelihood of such a book selling in a California Used Book shop would be lower than the likelihood of it selling in a New York Used Book shop.
So since we’ve established that selling on-line has some big benefits, the next step is to delve into what specifically sells, where to acquire it and how much to pay for it!
What Sells?
The answer to this question is not simple to answer, though I can give several “hot topics” that I find usually sell well.
Also unless dealing in good condition/Rare/1st edition books with sought after value, fiction titles can be a tricky market. Usually I stick to the Non-Fiction books and I find these are more often than not a safer bet. Unless of course you have specific knowledge of an author you know to be a “hot seller”.
Here is a list of what I consider to be relatively “hot topics” by the way there is always an exception or two to any rule of thumb such as this one.
Architecture History Obscure books (old sports books how to genre etc.) Yachts/Yachting Centennial Books (Celebrating small towns and cities history better if they come with plates also etc.) The Scarce the better!! Medical Books (with copyright that pre-dates Circa. 1900 and with plates/illustrated) (Non-Fiction Titles with plates that have copyrights that pre-date 1900, are always a safe bet).
It would be a good practice for you to make your own list as you go, of book types/authors that you consider to be “hot”. Such a list will become invaluable the longer you compile it.
I shall probably submit more to this section of the article before it’s posted on the website www.workingfromyourpc.com , keep checking the news articles page on that site for updates to this particular section.
