I’ve been hard at work negotiating my latest book deal, when I noticed my cell phone had a call registered in voice mail. The voice mail emitted a thick Scottish brogue. David Miller was calling me. I had no idea what he was saying. I stopped thinking in American English and switched my thoughts to my native Jamaican dialect. Then, oddly enough, his message made complete sense. The Scotland born author works in the field of advertising and marketing. David told me about his new book “The Ghost of Bobby. He created a small press edition that was about to hit the market. He had gotten my name from a friend of his in Los Angeles and called to get some marketing ideas. He sent me a review copy to read with the promise that I would call him back. The elegant little hard cover book was sparsely illustrated but carefully detailed by artist Julia Kuo. Her subtle watercolors engaged my attention without distracting me from the story. I was totally fascinated with the idea of a mystery thriller for kids. David Miller had written an eerie story that reads like the best of Edgar Allen Poe for the 8- 12-year-old mystery reader. “The Ghost of Bobby” is published by 72andSunny Publishing, and is the gritty tale of a 19th century English family whose twin children, Sammy and Thomas, are forced to embark on a journey of terror against a sinister man named Skeats.

Skeats pursues the family from the streets of London to Paris and back, fortunately, always under the ever-watchful protection of a powerful and mysterious phantom dog named Bobby.

As a book designer and publications consultant, I was thrilled to have this meticulously designed and thoroughly enjoyable story to read. The personality of the supporting characters weren’t highly detailed but they worked on the strength of the story. I later passed the book to my two boys and they loved it too. .

David Miller came up with a unique concept for spreading the word about this fantastic tale of a doomed family and the phantom canine who brings them justice and redemption. “I want to get 300 reviewers to post on my website’s blog. I want people to get the same goose bumps that my daughters got when I created this book.” Said David. Illustrator Julia Kuo delicately created the artwork and Christina Kelly and Virginia Sin design the book. The story reminded me of the spooky atmospheric quality of the Lemony Snicket series. I was transported to a 19th Century European town. I wholeheartedly recommend this one for kids and adults who like creepy but beautiful mystery stories.
