Digital cameras have captured the photographic marketplace because you no longer need to use film. This type has no need of the chemical processes that a film camera uses. Of course, because the images are digital, it means that they can be stored, filed and manipulated using a computer or specialized printer. Captured images are stored as bytes or binary information; ones and zeros to most people and are referred to as pixels.
These cameras still use lenses in much the same way that conventional cameras do. However, it is how the digital camera captures the light that makes all the difference because it achieves this by using a special sensor as opposed to film. A feature of the better quality versions is they have a sensor that converts light into electrical charges using a different system to their less expensive cousins. The less expensive capture system called CMOS is generally in lower end cameras and probably won't replace the more expensive CCD although it does an admirable job.
The price has been depreciating recently and one of the main reasons for this is the introduction of CMOS image sensors; because CMOS sensors are less expensive and are easier to manufacture than CCD sensors. The CCD and CMOS devices used in digital cameras capture light like tiny solar collectors both achieving the same effect but just by differing methods. When shopping for a camera of this type, you should take note of certain key features. From the point of view on having good quality photos, search for a high megapixel version as it will be worth it for the image you will capture with it; you may find a model that is being superseded shortly - available at a discount.
Better photos will be taken with a digital camera that has an optical zoom and not just a digital zoom; optical zooms can produce some interesting effects. Although it shouldn't be a problem, opt for rechargeable batteries as they can always come in handy and you don't waste as much money on the disposable ones. If you want to do more than just take snap shots, look for a model that is high on functionality to create stunning photos you can be proud of; examples are listed below:

High resolution cameras require more space to store images so you will probably need an additional storage card. Think 1GB as a bare minimum with today's high resolution models so if you're a photo junkie you can takes pictures of just about anything.
If you are going to be taking your camera everywhere, choose a handy and portable model. Why carry around something that is going to make you neck ache when it is not necessary; unless you are a professional photographer of course. Hopefully, these few tips will be enough to steer you in the right direction when you come to buy your camera. The future of photography has moved on and digital cameras are that future with almost everyone carrying around one type or another every day!
